Just wondering if they sound similar, and differ only in marketing.

The differences are not too large. However, there are certain sound qualities and characteristics of certain qualities that you may have. For example, you can not have a sony THX $ 1,000, but with Onkyo and Yamaha. Theres an advantage there. Denon has the best sound of the group. Sony has probably the most features for the money, but quality construction. Marketing is not a wonderful thing.
